Ingredient Spotlight – Jalapeño

These spicy little chiles are full of nutritional benefits.  Jalapeños range between 2,500 and 5,000 on the scoville scale.  Jalapeños get their spice from a compound known as capsaicin, which has many powerful health benefits.

The capsaicin present in jalapeños may help promote weight loss by boosting the metabolism.  The heat from the pepper can also help to decrease appetite. Jalapeños are also high in vitamin C, which can help fight the effects of the common cold and boost the immune system.  One serving of jalapeño contains 66% of the recommended daily dose of vitamin C!  The capsaicin in jalapeños has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, so it can help prevent bacteria growth.

Although the jalapeño is delicious any time of the year, it seems like the perfect addition to a meal during the winter, when we are more likely to catch a cold.  Enjoy jalapeño blended into a spicy salsa, sliced atop a poke bowl, or wrapped up as an ingredient in a burrito.  However you choose to consume jalapeño, it is a great way to add flavor, spice, and vitamin C to your meal.
